In West Beirut, so far no one went out of their houses at night. Neighbors hung out with each other. The biggests flashback was our neighbors in the top roof running to our apartment, I opened the door yesterday morning and said: "welcome, you remember the route to my room (because it is the safest from RPGs and Bullets)" They replied, it has been 18 years....
Today morning, life in our street is a bit better, everyone is going to check their stores, but life is still slow compared to the busy street we usually live in. Seems the army took over ...
We just heard that another Future broadcasting station got burnt, a station that broadcasts in Armenian, the Opposition are not stopping and giving the Government more raw material to digest and use it against them... the great divide increases. The tension is spreading outside Beirut, but no full scale offensive from any side.
The UNIFIL have been neutral in the South

I wonder if it's possible to have something as a third force antiwar movement?
Even pacifist activity could have an effect with slogans, bread not bombs etc.
I think your post about what to do to protect yourself, might be good on my blog or whatever you think. I haven't purposely put anything new up.
Juan Cole has been saying that this has to do with Bush wanting to hurt Hezbollah, before he's out of office.
Thanks for keeping us informed, MFL. I had been planning to come this summer to study Arabic at AUB. I hope I still can. But more importantly, I just want this violence to end and the divide that you mentioned not to increase.
Oh, and I think Juan Cole has a point. Bush wants to ensure that his party stays in power in November. Another war would be the perfect way. Bush could very easily be poking and Hizbullah is responding accordingly. While I have sympathy for a group of people that are underrepresented, I have no sympathy for violence and using arms against one's fellow citizens.
Comrade Renegade, only my trusted Comrades and two party-affiliated friends know who I am. I trust them all, and I can write anything I want safe and sound.
Margaret, when you and Ayla visit Lebanon, I am your personal guide.
:O)
