Lefties and Starbucks? Doesn't quite fit, this last one, no? From this point of view, our Syrian Lefties are much better: you find them either in Havana or Rawda coffe shops drinking ONLY tea, of all ironies.

And regarding our government, don't get me wrong, I am definitely against it, but we Syrians cannot afford doing something stupid right now, like that arse Bunni called for Bush to "liberate" him. This is what most of the people I know think: now we unite, but the moment everything will be nice and quiet, we'll talk. An it will be a very long talk, indeed...

hehehe

believe it, and Mcdonalds, Burger King, & of course others...

As regarding the regime, I prefer to go on a progressive movement, that in the long-run will screw all reactionaries...

back in my university and school days, Riyad el Turk used to be a mentor, for sticking up in what he believed :)

Well, for starters, I think progresive is the way, as the only faction powerful enough to do a change nowadays are the fundamentalist. And tell you the truth, I rather a dictatorship that encourages my Atheism than a "democracy" where got stoned to death for being a woman (see Iran, for instance, they have democratic ellections a la US).

But really, who would preffer a MacRubber over falafel at Barbar???

????????

3amo, next time you are coming to Lebanon, email me!

I am saying that I only see that the only option is to work on establishing a progressive movement. Democracy will never take place in this world, it took centuries in Europe to evolve, you can't patch it up out of the blues.

Lebanon's democracy has been partially its weakness, where at least it is working better than say Egypt's Moubarak regime...

And Barbar's specialty these days are "el frareeej" :P

I know. The urban legends regarding democracy as the best way of rule are as fake as urban legend go. One just has to take a look at the original Periclean democracy in Athens to realise how far the two concepts stand. Comunism and socialism would have been a good solution, were it not for the basic human mind and ego, as your average human would never share his goods on his own accord, lest he is Buddha, or Dalai Lama.
Democracy in nowadays Europe isn't very far from, say, Mubarak's Egypt. The only difference may be that in Europe you have this decieving machine called "freedom of expresion" and maybe better insurance plans. The problem with Arabs is that we've confused ourselves with Islam, or better said with the West concept of Islam, so bad that we forgot how to think right. Solution is really simple: Learn! Learn! Learn!

Last time I went to Lebanon must have been in late 2004. After all the Hariri business I swore never to set foot there before establishing a Lebanese embassy in Damascus. That day has not come yet, unfortunately, I am looking forward to pay my tribute to Lebanon and remember it through my cam lens.

But if you come to Damascus by chance, I'll take you to 3la Kefak, the best falafel shop there is! It's sure to make you forget forever the rubbery taste of all corporate gringo junk food!

can i just say something...

i really don't think leftist movements in 'third world' countries can really be successful under the current political climate.

that may be self-evident, but it's quite a revelation coming from a lfist that has lived in the west all her life...

i mean even the left in a western construct is falling apart.

the problem is Anonymous, that the left is too lost...

I wrote an investigation on the matter, http://marxistfromlebanon.blogspot.com/2007/04/investigating-lebanese-left-part-iii.html
